US EPA Method 200.8 Determination of Trace Elements in Waters and Wastes by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS)
The EPA 200.8 standard from the Environmental Protection Agency defines a standard method for determining trace elements in groundwater, surface water, drinking water, as well as in waste water, sludges and soils. The standard is aimed at the precise detection of elements such as mercury, lead or cadmium and describes a multi-element determination using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The sample under examination is injected into a plasma stream in order to ionize free atoms and measure the resulting ion stream in a mass spectrometer.
The standard procedure according to the EPA 200.8 method is used both in environmental analysis as well as in quality monitoring of drinking water. Other applications are found in foodstuffs analysis and in research and development activities. In environmental analysis, for example, the ICP-MS procedure described is used to identify toxic elements, for instance in ultratrace determination of mercury in water in the environment. In the foodstuffs industry, the method is employed for monitoring of drinking water quality, or to determine to strontium isotope ratio in wine and grain.
In terms of its content, the EPA 200.8 standard describes the experimental setup and procedure; it also covers possible interferences and provides safety instructions. It furthermore describes the devices and reagents used, along with detailed specifications on sample extraction, quality control, calibration, experimental procedure and calculation of the results.
With its ICP-MS devices, Analytik Jena offers an advanced solution for determining trace elements in environmental and foodstuffs analysis which meet the requirements of the EPA 200.8 method for precision. The devices of this series impress with a combination of detection sensitivity, speed, reduced argon consumption and high throughput.
