UOP 936 Standard Test Method for Determination of Combined Nitrogen in Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Including Propylene by Chemiluminescence

The UOP 936 standard outlines a procedure for determining combined nitrogen in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), including propylene, using chemiluminescence detection. This method is designed to measure all nitrogen compounds that are extractable by aqueous acid, such as ammonia, amines, nitriles, and amides. The procedure yields quantitative results in the range of 0.2 ppm to 3 % (mg/kg).

This method describes a procedure to extract these nitrogen compounds from LPG cylinders quantitatively using a solution of 2-N acetic acid in water. Afterwards the acid extract is withdrawn and analyzed for total nitrogen by chemiluminescence, utilizing ASTM D4629.

Nitrogen compounds like ammonia and amines can readily adsorb on stainless steel surfaces in contact with LPG, potentially leading to operational issues and safety concerns. By accurately measuring these nitrogen compounds, the method helps to ensure the quality and safety of LPG during transportation, storage and further processing.

In summary, UOP 936 is a crucial standard for determining combined nitrogen in liquefied petroleum gas using chemiluminescence detection.
