UOP 779 Standard Test Method for Determination of Chloride in Petroleum Distillates by Microcoulometry

The UOP 779 standard outlines the test method for determining chloride in petroleum distillates using microcoulometry. This method is applicable to liquid hydrocarbons at concentrations ranging from approximately 0.3 to 1000 ppm. Higher concentrations can be determined with appropriate sample dilution. The method specifically measures total organic chloride, while some inorganic chloride present as salts is not included. Additionally, except for fluoride which is not detectable, other halogens that may be present in the sample are determined as chloride.

The method is able to provide comprehensive information about the chloride content in petroleum distillates. Chloride measurements are crucial because chloride compounds can cause serious corrosion and fouling in refining and petrochemical processes, leading to equipment damage and operational inefficiencies. Chlorine compounds act as catalyst poisons, process streams containing must be cleaned before entering hydrocracker units to prevent damage. By accurately measuring the total organic chloride content, this method helps assessing the risk potential of petroleum distillates. This is essential for maintaining the integrity and longevity of processing equipment.

In summary, UOP 779 is a crucial standard for determining chloride in petroleum distillates using highly sensitive microcoulometry.

With the multi EA 5100, Analytik Jena offers a powerful system for total chlorine determination in organic solids, liquids and gases. It´s convenient coulometric detection in combination with integrated safety features, such as self check system, auto protection and heated transfer lines, ensure that detection limits as low as 0.3 ppm, required by UOP 779, can be reached easily.
