DIN EN 1484 Water analysis – Guidelines for the Determination of Total Organic Carbon (TOC) and Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC)
The DIN EN 1484 standard defines standard test methods for measuring organic carbon in drinking water, ground water, surface water, sea water and wastewater. These technical regulations allow for the quantification of the TOC and DOC value in water samples in a concentration range between 0.3 mg/L and 1,000 mg/L. The standard describes a method based on the oxidation of organic carbon in water to carbon dioxide by either combustion or reaction with an oxidizer, UV radiation or other high-energy radiation. The quantification of the formed carbon dioxide in the oxidation process can be carried out with various methods. These include in particular infrared spectrometry, but also coulometry and thermal conductivity among others.
The methods defined in the standard allow an assessment of organic water pollution. The analytical determination of the TOC and DOC value in accordance with DIN EN 1484 is relevant in various areas of water analysis, especially in quality and process control of drinking water and wastewater to test for limits, defined by environmental agencies. In addition, measuring the TOC according to DIN EN 1484 is also important in other fields, for example in environmental or agricultural sciences, or for pure water quality control in the pharmaceutical industry, power plants or microelectronics and elector plating.
In terms of its content, the DIN EN 1484 standard first addresses terminological definitions and methodological bases before proceeding in detail to reagents and instructions for sample taking, sample preparation, experimental procedure, calibration and analysis of the results.
With the multi N/C x300 series, Analytik Jena offers a powerful and reliable standard solution for TOC/DOC analysis. The device series not only meets the requirements of DIN EN 1484, it also fulfills the requirements of DIN EN 12260, DIN EN 15936 and DIN EN ISO 20236. In addition to the TOC and DOC values, other sum parameters such as NPOC, TC, TIC, POC and TNb can also be determined quickly and easily.
