ASTM D5762 Standard Test Method for Nitrogen in Liquid Hydrocarbons, Petroleum and Petroleum Products by Boat-Inlet Chemiluminescence
ASTM D5762 outlines the procedures for determining the nitrogen content in liquid hydrocarbons, including petroleum process streams and lubricating oils. This test method covers a concentration range from 40 μg/g to 10,000 μg/g of nitrogen. The method employs boat-inlet chemiluminescence to measure the nitrogen content, which involves the oxidation of nitrogen compounds and conversion to nitric oxide (NO), followed by a reaction with ozone (O3) to produce an excited state of nitrogen dioxide (NO2*), which emits light that is measured to determine the nitrogen concentration.
Nitrogen compounds in petroleum can contaminate refinery catalysts, reducing their efficiency and lifespan. These compounds are particularly challenging to hydrogenate, making the nitrogen content a critical parameter for assessing the effectiveness of hydrotreating processes. In lubricating oils, the nitrogen content can indicate the presence of nitrogen-containing additives, which are essential for the oil's performance.
The use of horizontal systems with boat-inlet and chemiluminescence detection allows for the accurate and precise measurement of nitrogen at low to middle concentrations in matrices, which are not suited for vertical combustion, making it a valuable tool for research and quality control of highly viscous and high boiling liquids.
ASTM D5762 plays a vital role in ensuring the quality and performance of petroleum process streams and products, such as lubricating oils. By providing a standardized method for nitrogen determination, this norm supports efforts to optimize refining processes, maintain catalyst performance, and achieve product specifications.
With the multi EA 5100 Analytik Jena offers combustion elemental analyzers for nitrogen determination in versatile matrices that meet the requirements of ASTM D5762.
