ASTM D4929 Standard Test Method for Determination of Organic Chloride Content in Crude Oil
The ASTM D4929 standard describes testing procedures for quantifying organic chloride compounds in crude oil. Here, the standard focuses on a measurement range in excess of 1 µg/g of organically bound chloride. It describes two possible methods of measurement: The first is sodium biphenyl reduction, and the second is microcoulometry; both methods are preceded by a distillation process that yields a naphtha fraction.
The ASTM D4929 standard is mainly relevant for quality control in refinery processes. Although chloride does not occur naturally in crude oil, it is used in oil production and transportation for cleaning purposes at wells, in tanks, or along pipelines. Before the crude oil is turned into other products in a refinery, the chloride is filtered back out to prevent contamination. Because chloride is a precursor to hydrochloric acid, which can damage refinery equipment, there are strict limits governing its presence in crude oil. In addition to crude oil refining, the standard is also relevant to other processes, for example in the quality control of cooking oils.
The ASTM D4929 standard first summarizes the two salient methods for measuring chloride in crude oil, and contextualizes them within the process of refining crude oil. The standard then describes in detail the technical requirements for the measurement procedures, addressing possible sources of interference, laying out requirements for reagent purity and outlining procedures for distillation and purification. The two measurement methods (sodium biphenyl reduction and microcoulometry) are described from a process engineering standpoint, with detailed requirements on the equipment involved, on the methods' preparation, on the measurement itself, on the calculation of chloride content, and on quality control.
