ISO 10540-3:2002 Animal and vegetable fats and oils — Determination of phosphorus content — Part 3: Method using inductively coupled plasma (ICP) optical emission spectroscopy

ISO 10540-3:2002 specifies a method for the quantification of phosphorus in animal and vegetable fats and oils using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). This method is applicable to oils with low phosphorus content, without any turbidity or visible sediment. Depending on the dilution solvent used, most types of vegetable oils can be analyzed, including crude, degummed, refined, bleached, deodorized, and hardened oils, as well as nearly all types of lecithins and phosphatides. This method is only suitable when phosphorus is present in a solubilized form. When phosphorus is present as fine particles, such as bleaching earth, ICP-OES analysis results in poor recovery due to nebulization and atomization problems.

The relevance of measuring phosphorus content in fats and oils lies in its impact on the quality and stability of these products. Phosphorus compounds can affect the refining process, storage stability, and overall quality of fats and oils. The ICP-OES method is important because it provides a reliable and accurate means of quantifying phosphorus levels in various oil samples. The sensitivity and precision make it suitable for ensuring product quality and compliance with industry standards.

The ICP-OES method involves the excitation of atoms in the sample using an inductively coupled plasma, causing them to emit light at characteristic wavelengths. The intensity of this emitted light is measured to determine the concentration of phosphorus in the sample. This technique is particularly valuable because it can handle complex matrices and provide precise measurements. The accuracy and reliability of ICP-OES are crucial for ensuring that fats and oils meet the required quality standards and for optimizing the refining process.

With the highly robust and sensitive PlasmaQuant 9200 series, Analytik Jena offers a powerful, reliable and compliant solution for ICP-OES analyses to fulfill the requirements of ISO 10540-3:2002
