ASTM D8110 Standard Test Method for Elemental Analysis of Distillate Products by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS)
The ASTM D8110 standard defines a standard test method for measuring trace elements in light and middle distillate petroleum products. The method described herein is based on inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), by which heavy metals such as mercury, lead and cadmium can be identified and quantified. The method laid out in the standard covers a concentration range of a few ng/L up to approximately 1,000 ng/L, and higher concentrations can also be measured by dilution.
In the petrochemical industry, the ASTM D8110 standard is considered a standard method for determining trace elements in naphtha but also other petroleum products such as gasoline, kerosine and jet fuel. Naphtha, an untreated petroleum distillate, is also known as crude petrol and is an important raw material for gasoline production and in the manufacture of plastics such as polyethylene and polypropylene. Impurities in the naphtha crude oil fraction are undesirable in several respects. In gasoline production, metal components such as calcium, magnesium or sodium in naphtha can cause harmful deposits on engine components. In addition, nickel can damage catalytic converters, while vanadium brings an increased risk of corrosion. From an environmental standpoint, toxic metals such as lead, mercury and arsenic must be avoided in the refining process, and any contamination by these substances must be continuously monitored. The ICP-MS method as defined in ASTM D8110 is suitable for these quality and process controls, thanks to its extra-low detection limit.
The body of the ASTM D8110 standard covers both how to set up the process, the reagents and materials, and how to prepare and handle samples. In addition, the standard addresses calibration of the method, analysis, and data validation.
With its powerful PlasmaQuant MS, Analytik Jena offers an ICP-MS instrument that meets the requirements of ASTM 8110. The machine's high long-term stability combined with best sensitivity and lowest argon consumption makes it a compelling option.
