ASTM D7111-15a Standard Test Method for Determination of Trace Elements in Middle Distillate Fuels by Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES)

ASTM D7111-15a is a standard that outlines the test method for determining the concentrations of trace elements in middle distillate fuels using Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES). This method involves analyzing the fuel sample to detect elements such as calcium (Ca), lead (Pb), sodium (Na), potassium (K), and vanadium (V), among others. The concentration range covered by this test method is approximately 0.1 mg/kg to 2.0 mg/kg.

The parameters measured in ASTM D7111-15a—trace elements like calcium, lead, sodium, potassium, and vanadium—are crucial for several reasons. Trace metals in turbine fuels can cause corrosion and deposition on turbine components at elevated temperatures. For example, trace level copper in middle distillate aviation turbine fuel can significantly accelerate thermal instability of the fuel, leading to oxidation and production of detrimental insoluble deposits in the engine. Accurate measurement of these elements is essential for assessing the contamination level and ensuring the quality and usability of middle distillate fuels.

By using ICP-AES, ASTM D7111-15a ensures high sensitivity and accuracy in detecting trace levels of elements that can affect fuel performance and engine longevity. This method helps in maintaining the efficiency of turbine and diesel engines, protecting equipment from corrosion and damage, and ensuring the overall quality of middle distillate fuels.
