UOP 991 Test Method for Trace Chloride, Fluoride, and Bromide in Liquid Organics by Combustion Ion Chromatography (CIC)
UOP 991 is a standardized test method for determining trace concentrations of chloride (Cl), fluoride (F), and bromide (Br) in liquid organic samples using combustion ion chromatography (CIC). This method is applicable to various liquid organics, including hydrocarbons and oxygenates. The procedure involves combusting the sample in an oxygen-rich environment to convert the halides into their respective hydrogen halides. These are then captured in an aqueous solution and analyzed using ion chromatography. The method has a lower limit of quantitation of 0.1 mg/kg for fluoride and chloride, and 0.2 mg/kg for bromide.
The measurement of trace halides in liquid organics is crucial due to their potential impact on product quality and environmental safety. Chloride, fluoride, and bromide can cause corrosion in processing equipment, poison catalysts in further processing and contribute to the formation of harmful by-products during combustion. Accurate determination of these halides is essential for ensuring the purity and safety of liquid organic products
The CIC method used in UOP 991 is important because it provides a reliable and precise means of measuring trace halides. This method offers high sensitivity and specificity, allowing for the detection of low concentrations of chloride, fluoride, and bromide in complex matrices. By providing standardized procedures, UOP 991 ensures consistency and accuracy in halide measurements, supporting effective quality control in the chemical and petrochemical industries.
With the ICprep series, Analytik Jena offers powerful systems for the sample preparation step, described in UOP 991, as precondition for the quantification of trace halides by ion chromatography. ICprep systems offer highest safety standards to ensure quantitative combustion, such as Self Check System, flame sensor technology and heated transfer lines, to ensure most sensitive detection by an ion chromatograph.
