NEN 2675+C1 Greenhouse Glass: Determination of Optical Properties of Greenhouse Covering Materials and Screens

NEN 2675+C1 is a Dutch standard that deals with determining the light transmission properties of materials used for greenhouse covers. It is particularly relevant in agriculture and horticulture, especially with regard to optimising light penetration in greenhouses to promote plant growth.

NEN 2675 was originally developed to measure the light transmission properties of standard greenhouse glass. However, with the emergence of new materials, such as structured, diffuse, or coated glass, as well as thermal screens, the standard was revised in 2018. The aim was to enable standardised, comparable measurements of hemispherical light transmission, i.e. the amount of light that penetrates a material from all directions.

This measurement is particularly important as it allows a more realistic assessment of the light conditions in the greenhouse than the conventional vertical transmission. The standard also takes into account the scattering of light, which is crucial for uniform light distribution on plants.

UV/Vis spectroscopy is a key method for determining light transmission. The material is irradiated with light in the ultraviolet (UV) and visible (Vis) spectrum. Measurements are carried out hemispherically using a spectrophotometer, taking into account all angles of incidence. This is achieved using special measuring devices such as integrating spheres.

NEN 2675+C1 is particularly relevant for:

  • Manufacturers of greenhouse covers (e.g. glass, films, screens)
  • Agricultural and horticultural businesses that use greenhouses
  • Research institutes in the field of agricultural sciences and plant physiology
  • Testing laboratories and certification bodies that test materials for light transmission

This standard allows these stakeholders to access objective and comparable data on light transmission. This information is crucial for selecting suitable materials and optimising plant growth conditions.

With the SPECORD PLUS and the corresponding integrating sphere, transparent, scattering samples can be measured easily and reproducibly.
