ASTM G144 Standard Test Method for Determination of Residual Contamination of Materials and Components by Total Carbon Analysis Using a High Temperature Combustion Analyzer
The ASTM G144 standard outlines the test method for determining residual contamination in aqueous samples through total carbon (TC) analysis using catalytic high-temperature combustion and non-dispersive infrared detection (NDIR) for CO2 quantification. This method is specifically designed to analyze aqueous samples and is applicable to systems, components, and materials that require a high level of cleanliness. The parameters of interest is the TC content in water used to clean, extract, or sample parts, components, materials, or systems in a concentration range from 0.2 to 5.0 mgC/L (max 10.0 mgC/L).
The parameters in this method allow to quantify the total carbon content, which is a critical indicator of residual contamination. Total carbon analysis is essential for ensuring the cleanliness of systems and components, particularly in applications where contamination can significantly impact performance and safety. For instance, in oxygen systems, even trace amounts of contaminants can lead to hazardous conditions, making thorough cleanliness verification crucial.
ASTM G144 is particularly important because it provides a reliable and standardized approach to measuring residual contamination. By using a high-temperature combustion analyzer, the method ensures accurate and consistent results, which are vital for maintaining the integrity and safety of high-cleanliness systems. Additionally, the method's applicability to aqueous-based cleaning and sampling methods makes it versatile and widely usable in various industries.
With more than 30 years of experience Analytik Jena offers customized analysis solutions for the precise measurement of TC values in accordance with ASTM G144. With the TOC/TNb analyzers of the multi N/C 3300 series Analytik Jena provides different devices specially designed for TC and TOC measurement which are characterized by high sensitivity and reproducibility in the low concentration range. These analyzers not only meet the requirements of G144, but also fulfill the requirements of US EPA 415, US EPA 9060, USP <643> or APHA SM 5310B. In addition to total carbon further sum parameters like IC, TOC, DOC, NPOC and TNb can also be determined quickly and easily.
