ASTM D5386 Standard Test Method for Color of Liquids Using Tristimulus Colorimetry
ASTM D5386 describes a spectrophotometric method for measuring the color of clear liquids without turbidity using tristimulus colorimetry (based on the CIE color system) and offers an objective alternative to visual color determination according to ASTM D8005. The aim is to determine the color of liquids objectively and reproducibly, especially in the range of platinum-cobalt color values (Pt-Co) between 0 and 100.
The method is based on measuring the transmission of a liquid across the visible spectrum. These spectral data are converted into tristimulus values (X, Y, Z), from which the color in the Pt-Co system can be derived. This system is particularly suitable for almost colorless to slightly yellowish liquids, but not for strongly colored or cloudy samples.

Monitoring the color of fuels, lubricants and solvents - Chemical industry
Quality control in the manufacture of intermediate and end products in polymer and resin production - Pharmaceutical industry
Control of carrier solutions, injection fluids or excipients - Food and beverage industry
Control of distillates and flavors
ASTM D5386 is an indispensable tool for quality control in many industries where the color of clear liquids is a critical parameter. Its use contributes significantly to product safety, process monitoring and regulatory compliance.
The requirements for analytical testing are becoming increasingly demanding and complex, and regulations and standards are becoming ever stricter. The SPECORD PLUS series is characterized by high-end technology for precise UV/Vis spectroscopic measurements and reliable results.
