Lab automation to accelerate research on tropical diseases

Wed 19 Aug, 2026

Jena, August 18, 2026 – Developing new active ingredients to combat infectious and tropical diseases requires powerful research infrastructures and close collaboration between science and industry. The role modern laboratory automation plays in this effort was the focus of a visit by Member of the German Bundestag Sascha van Beek (CDU) to the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology (Leibniz-HKI) in Jena on August 13. As part of his summer tour on neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), the spokesperson of the Parliamentary Advisory Board of the German Network against Neglected Tropical Diseases (DNTDs) learned about automated drug discovery at the institute and the contribution of industrial partners such as Analytik Jena.

One item on the visit agenda was the JenXplor robotics platform, which is used at Leibniz-HKI to automate complex research processes. The platform was developed jointly with Analytik Jena and helps researchers process large numbers of samples efficiently and identify new drug candidates more quickly.

Technology as a bridge between research and application

The collaboration between Leibniz-HKI and Analytik Jena is a strong example of how scientific research and industrial innovation can work together. While Leibniz-HKI explores new approaches to combating infectious diseases, Analytik Jena contributes its expertise in laboratory automation and intelligent analytical solutions.

“The challenges involved in combating infectious diseases require close collaboration among research institutions, technology providers, and industry partners. As a specialist in laboratory automation and analytical technology, we create the technological foundation needed to make research processes more efficient and accelerate innovation,” says Lars Böttcher, Vice President Technology at Analytik Jena.

Jena as a hub for connected innovation

The exchange also underscored the importance of Jena as an innovation hub. The close network of research institutions, universities, and technology companies creates important conditions for translating scientific insights into concrete health care applications more quickly.
