Reliable fluorine determination is essential in the chemical, petrochemical, and circular economy sectors, where complex organic samples can affect processing, product quality, and regulatory compliance. Pyrolysis oils, alternative fuels, catalysts, process intermediates, ultra-pure solvents, specialty chemicals, cement, and other construction materials present challenges including low analyte levels, matrix effects, and unpredictable digestion behavior.
This web seminar compares established total fluorine analysis by combustion ion chromatography (CIC) with a novel workflow combining sample combustion and high-resolution continuum source molecular absorption spectrometry (HR-CS-MAS). The solution integrates the self-optimizing ICprep combustion system with the contrAA 800 G graphite furnace spectrometer, which also enables trace-level analysis of metals and metalloids by atomic absorption spectrometry from sample volumes as low as 20 µL.
Real-world applications cover fluorine in pyrolysis oils and aromatic compounds as well as fluorine and chlorine in fuels and construction materials. With accuracy and detection limits comparable to CIC, the alternative approach offers greater throughput: post-combustion measurements take only three to four minutes per replicate, enabling more measurements, stronger statistical confidence, and efficient routine or research analysis.
